We’re Back! Look Who Made the Top-Five Best Performing Cities in the US.

Great news for home sellers, the newly released 2021 Milken Institute’s Best-Performing Cities listed Raleigh-Cary is the country’s 5th best-performing city.

Last year, Raleigh dropped down to number 11 on the Milken Institute’s annual Best-Performing Cities rankings after getting pummeled (in many ways) by the pandemic. Not only are we back, we’ve made the top five list

The Milken Institute’s Best-Performing Cities index tracks the economic performance of approximately 400 US metropolitan statistical areas (MSA) by using an outcomes-based set of metrics. These include:

  • job creation;
  • wage gains;
  • broadband access;
  • housing affordability; and
  • high-tech GDP growth

Salt Lake City, Austin, Texas, the Palm Bay-Melbourne metro on Florida’s Atlantic Coast and Provo, Utah are currently leading the pack; however, Raleigh knocked San Francisco out of the top spot, as well as Dallas, Orlando and Seattle. WOW!

According to the report, “The Raleigh metro boasts three major research universities, which provide a well-educated, young workforce. The metro also has 12 high-tech industries (seventh), including communications equipment manufacturing (LQ of 4.4), pharmaceuticals manufacturing (LQ of 4.8), and software publishers (LQ of 3.4). Moreover, the region is backstopped by generally affordable housing (30th for 2014-18) – especially when compared to tech hubs like San Francisco – and top-tier broadband access (31st).”

Another critical factor is the recent surge of tech hiring, thanks to companies like Amazon (currently looking to fill 1,400 jobs in the region) and RedHat. In fact, a recent report from North Carolina Technology Association shows 2021 started the year hiring 28,802. Tech jobs are hotter than ever in the RTP!

Being in the top-five is excellent news for local homeowners who are considering listing their home soon; the Triangle is now an even more attractive area to live. Higher wages, more jobs, and affordable housing – it’s like hitting the trifecta of advantages.
